GovTrack.us is running this experiment to see if the GovTrack community can collaboratively write a letter to Congress. Strength in numbers!
This isn't a place to rant, it's an opportunity to work together convince congressmen why this is a bad bill. See what others are writing and synthesize the most convincing letter. Then rate the contenders so the best rises to the top. Tips: be personal, concise, targeted, and informative.
GovTrack will deliver the top-rated letter in person to appropriate congressmen. Check back here for updates on the process.

I am exceedingly concerned about the passing of H.R. 1913! I believe language in this bill is so vague that it could be interpreted to impact free speech.
Additional concerns I have with this bill are:
(a) Unequal protection of laws under the 14th Amendment
(b) Punishes thought rather than mere intent to commit crime
(c) Wider immediate application than claimed
(d) Constitutes a Federal power grab
(e) Trends toward nationalization of state and local law and the internationalization of federal law and a corresponding rise in anti-Semitic and anti-Christian activity
(f) Incremental move toward making speech a federal crime.
I urge Congress to vote NO on the passage of this bill!
HR 1913 limits our First Amendment Rights. We should not suppress the opinions of others as our country was founded on sharing thoughts and ideas. This bill is an example of partisan tolerance in which some are allowed to voice their opinions, while others are not. Just that concept alone is in violation of our First Amendment Rights. I have read that if a pervert "flashes" you, it's a misdemeanor. Yet should I hit him with my purse, I may be committing a felony because it may be considered a hate crime. This just does not make sense. I believe I have the right to express my opinion (and in this case I feel I would have been violated) by hitting someone with a purse. That hit has nothing to do with prejudice for someone's sexual orientation. That hit means someone violated my rights as a citizen.
I will never understand Liberals; they stand for all the wrong things, and paint the wrong label on them while doing it. With this in mind, I feel that it would be in the best interest of the American People, and your jobs, to vote NO to this very ANTICHRIST IDEA. Do you not think that the American people can actually vote you out for such things?
Violent crimes already have well defined properties, both on the state, and federal levels.
The Media will not be able to cover for you, and your neo-communist ideas much longer. The liberal Media is imploding all around you. It is simply a matter of time before this becomes a reality.
The people are not looking for Diet America, We want America, and if America is to remain America, then the right to ALL free speech, must not be altered, removed, misquoted, misinterpreted, or misused. Unless of course, it is subversive to the Word of God, as believed by our Nations founders, That "You can not even call yourself an American, If you subvert the Word of God."
To manufacture accusations, and assume bad thoughts from an individual, is Stalinist in nature. Victims in this Country already have ample course of action to take, in which they may find justice. I myself, have used this system, and have come to the personal knowledge, that it works.
Further, I have concern over the many loopholes, in this same bill, as I read it this morning, The language would allow Politicians, to go after innocent citizens, not only imprisoning them, but allowing the real problem to remain unsolved, and even get worse, as time progresses.......ALWAYS WATCH YOUR LANGUAGE.
I do not feel overall, that this bill has good intention to it, but once again, it is one parties attempt, the Democrat Party, to undermine, take away, alter, and misquote, the freedoms that we The People....have come to love, and enjoy.
Thank you for your time, and attention to this. If any of you, would like to share a forum with me on this, or ANY topic, I will be glad to meet with you personally, my email is doveed1968@yahoo.com.
In the mean time, you may want to also read the 14th amendment; there is some good stuff in there.

Now please bear in mind, I view a physical attack on any person as wrong, no matter their race or sexual orientation. I see that as evil. I believe homosexuality is wrong, but I would NEVER approve of someone bashing someone physically because of this. That's just as wrong as committing homosexuality.
However, what I fear is that this bill, thought to protect the 'safety' and 'freedoms' of certain individuals, will lead eventually lead to a reverse discrimination against those that hold a different opinion (I am speaking of those opposed to the homosexual group). Over and over again the bill said someone could be prosecuted for launching a physical attack or a perceived attack upon an individual. My question is this: how far is this 'perceived attack' to be taken? Does it mean that if I happen to hit someone in self-defense and they happen to be of a certain orientation or race that I will be charged with hate crime? Does this mean if I say, "This is wrong--you shouldn't be doing this" that I will be charged with precievably attacking an individual?
What does that word mean? Does it mean if I flinch near you, I almost attacked you? Or if I say, "No--I don't agree with you", I thereby am discriminatory and futhermore plotting you're demise?
It may seem like a simple thing--like fine print, really.
But most of our lives are spent trying to discern the fine print--we would be very foolish not to in this culture, (I mean, really, do you know how many car/hair/medicine commercials we'd end up falling for?).
That word perceived is not clearly defined, and, quite frankly, I do not like approving a bill that is so open-ended in its definitions, and equally open-ended in possibilities. It's scary--please, I beg you, DO NOT PASS THIS BILL!!!
Violent crimes are already well-defined in State and Federal criminal law. The attempt to criminalize thoughts (even bad thoughts) will result in damaging or destroying free speech in this country. Therefore H.R. 1913 is a bad law.
Such a bill introduces subjective, non-objective features into legal deliberations. The law must remain objective about actual harm to individuals, and not force juries and judges to guess about the claimed bad thoughts of individuals. If an accused individual is shown to have actually committed a real crime of violence there is plenty of recourse for the courts and the victims to get justice.
Further, the Federal Hate Crimes Statistics Law that is strengthend by this H.R. 1913 Act should be repealed, since it introduces subjectivity into statistics.
H.R. 1913 should more accurately be named the Free Speech Prevention Act of 2009.
I urge Congress to vote NO on H.R. 1913.
